Eddie Coyle was a well-recognized power to be reckoned with in the early 70’s on the regional, national and international weightlifting. Only his powerful talent from the weightlifting bench surpassed his friendly demeanor and love of the sport. When he retired from world competition to pursue his doctoral studies in Physical Education, he was still a gold medal lifter. Eddie lectured all over the world and was a true ambassador of weightlifting, weight training and wheelchair sports in general.
Between 1971 and 1988, Eddie won four gold medals in weightlifting at the Pan American Games, another two gold medals at the Paralympics and three more gold medals at the World Championships. He was a team member for the USA at the Toronto Paralympic Games in 1976 where he also won a gold medal in weightlifting.
Eddie also served on the United States Olympic Committee, the American College of Sports Medicine and the International Federation of Power Lifting. Eddie Coyle was a stellar athlete, intellectual thinker and articulate communicator.
