We have exciting news to share with you! Disabled Sports USA and Adaptive Sports USA are joining forces under the new name, Move United.
The merger of Disabled Sports USA and Adaptive Sports USA unifies community-based adaptive sports under one national organization, bringing recreational and competitive adaptive sports together for the first time. This merger will make Move United an influential, prominent national organization which will lead to increased support and raised public awareness for our important work, leading to more opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities to be included and valued.
There is nothing like the power of sport. Sport makes us more; physically, mentally and socially. That is true for people with and without disabilities, but often today’s youth and adults with disabilities have few opportunities to participate.
Move United will offer more than 50 sports (like our launch of the USA Wheelchair Football League at the NFL Draft this past weekend), to 100,000 people in 200 communities across the U.S. before the end of this year.
And through this merger, more exciting things are coming!
This merger reflects an ongoing, wholehearted commitment to the success of community-based adaptive sports organizations, because local programming is the most accessible and effective. Move United will support community-based partners through grants, insurance, outreach, training and more.
Move United’s ambitious goal is that 90% of the U.S. population is within a short drive of one of our local adaptive sports programs by 2028, when the Olympics and Paralympics return to the U.S.
With 110 years of combined adaptive sports experience coming together, Move United has the expertise to deliver safe and effective opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities so they can MOVE, through sports and recreation. This is only possible because we are a grassroots movement, UNITED with local member organizations, participants, hospitals, volunteers and sponsors to ensure youth and adults with disabilities benefit from sports in their communities.
One example of the power of our united movement is the #AdaptatHome program. Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic this past month, we have united with our local members organizations to offer free, live and on-demand adaptive fitness classes. In fact, we have collectively offered over 300 classes and more are being scheduled every day.
I will join Susan Rossi, former executive director of Adaptive Sports USA and now Director of Competition at Move United, to host a Facebook Live on Move United’s Facebook page on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. ET. This will be an opportunity to share more details and answer questions about the merger, our new branding and our united future.
The future of the adaptive sports movement has never been brighter and with you as a partner, we can ensure everyone has the opportunity to experience the power of sports.
