"Adaptive sports is my chosen therapy. When I have had a bad day, I can go to the gym and sweat it out... my injuries disappear, and I am able to balance and just have fun." - U.S. Air Force Veteran, Sarah Bonner
Sarah Bonner served as a financial management apprentice and disbursement technician in the Air Force from 2004-2006, supporting operations at Ramstein Air Base during the Global War on Terrorism, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. After developing lipedema and lymphedema in both legs along with injuries to her feet, back, and ankles, she was medically discharged in 2006.
Struggling with depression and searching for purpose after losing her military career, Bonner discovered adaptive sports through the Wounded Warrior Project's Soldier Ride program in 2010. Her first ride in Washington, D.C. on a recumbent tricycle proved transformative—including an unexpected encounter with President Obama when her bike chains tangled just feet away from him. The President personally checked on her well-being, creating a memorable moment that symbolized the support she found in the adaptive sports community.
That life-changing experience launched Bonner into exploring numerous adaptive sports. She transitioned from recumbent to upright cycling, conquered her fear of heights through skiing and snowboarding, and discovered her fastest sport in competitive kayaking. Today, she participates in CrossFit, cycling, horseback riding, kayaking, paddleboarding, ski-biking, and skiing—always eager to learn something new.
As a Move United Warfighters Ambassador, Bonner brings her passion for breaking barriers to others. She serves on the Board of Directors with Wintergreen Adaptive Sports, helping expand their program to include ski-bikes. Her professional background includes a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Radford University, and she currently works as a Service Facilitator supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Bonner's journey from struggling veteran to adaptive sports advocate demonstrates the transformative power of inclusive recreation in rebuilding lives and discovering new possibilities.
