Wheelchair Tennis Clinics

The JTCC/MedStar NRH Wheelchair Tennis Program will run free clinics on Sunday afternoons from September 11-November 20 and in the spring of 2023.

Clinics are split into two sessions: beginner adults and juniors clinic will be held 1:00-2:30 pm, and intermediate and advanced players will train from 2:00-4:00 pm (see more information on parameters below). Additional opportunities to play wheelchair tennis will be available summer and winter through JTCC. All clinics will be held at JTCC (5200 Campus Drive, College Park, MD 20740).

Sports wheelchairs are provided but are limited in numbers; if it is necessary, sports wheelchairs will be provided first come, first served in order of program registration.

After submitting registration through the website link, players can expect to receive a follow-up email within 72 hours of registration with their clinic assignment and a link to fill out player availability. Parameters for qualifying for the intermediate or advanced groups are listed below. Please email ghesse@jtcc.org">ghesse@jtcc.org if you have any questions or would like to schedule a player evaluation to move up in groups.

Intermediate Standards:

  • Must know the hub drill and be able to complete it in under 45 seconds (5 shots)
  • Must know all strokes (forehand, backhand, serve, volley), demonstrate basic technique (low to high, follow through), and execute 6 out of 10 shots from the appropriate position
  •  Must know tennis scoring
  • Must execute standard movement and positioning in tennis (inside vs outside turns, 45 degree angles)

Advanced Standards:

  • Must be able to complete the hub drill in under 35 seconds
  • Must be able to execute 8 out of 10 shots from the appropriate position with intermediate technique and be able to apply topspin or slice to the ball
  • Must have competed in at least one tennis tournament in the past year
  • Must know and/or execute advanced movement and stroke tactics (inverted backhand, reverse mobility)
  • Must be able to develop points with singles and doubles strategies and recognize opponent’s strengths and weaknesses
