Outreach & Exposition Events

Outreach and Exposition Events are held in partnership with VA and DOD medical centers, as well as other national disability resource fairs and conferences to raise awareness about the benefits of adaptive sport and physical activity for the disability community.  Move United participates or organizes 10-15 of these types of engagements annually across the U.S.  Examples include Ability Expo’s, AW2 Resource Care Fairs, Industry Conferences and more.

 

Type of Role: Volunteers are needed to staff a booth and represent Move United by talking to expo attendees.  Booth materials and information for distribution would be provided.

Time Commitment:  Usually ½ day – 1 day

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Move United 101 online course and general ambassador training

What’s Included: Unpaid, Travel expenses, Lunch (days of expo)

Move United Education Conference

The Move United Education Conference invites sport professionals, sport providers and athletes to come together for informative education & awareness sessions and hands-on skills-based learning workshops. The 2023 Move United Education Conference provides the tools, training, and conversations to make disability inclusion in sport a reality. This conference will incite action and challenge attendees to make an impact around inclusion, access & belonging.  Join your fellow professionals and emerging leaders in the in the sport and recreation industry who are currently creating or are looking to create opportunities for athletes with disabilities. Historically, attendees have represented a variety of affiliations including Move United member organizations, general sport organizations, city parks & recreation departments, National Governing Bodies, universities, schools, VA hospital staff, general hospital therapists, disability resource groups, and more.

 

Type of Role: Thanks to a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Move United has scholarship opportunities for 10 ambassadors to attend the conference (depending on interest, application process may apply).

Time Commitment:  May 15 – 17, 2023

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: None

What’s Included: Conference registration, lodging, meals plus up to $400 toward travel

Trails Measurement in National Forests

Move United, in partnership with the National Park Service and the Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting training events in 3 National Parks (Delaware Water Gap, PA, Grand Canyon, NV and Cascades, WA) to train park staff and other stakeholders how to measure accessibility on a trail using a HETAP device.  Read more about the program here.

Type of Role: Availability for 1-2 Warfighters (per location) to be trained on trails assessment and to get involved in accessibility with the local Parks Service.

Time Commitment:  4 days

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Warfighters who live in proximity* to the parks being measured preferred so an ongoing relationship may be developed. *Driving distance

Volunteer

Move United Sanctioned Competitions are among the best adaptive sport competitive events in the United States and are sanctioned by both Move United and applicable National Governing Bodies (NGBs). In 2023, 28 sanctioned competitions in 21 states run by Move United member organizations will serve over 2,000 athletes of all ages and performance levels, including new athletes, Paralympians, and warfighters. Move United Sanctioned Competitions are an integral part of Move United’s community-based adaptive sports movement, committed to leaving no one on the sidelines.

Sanctioned Competitions currently are inclusive of but not limited to the following summer sports: archery, para powerlifting, paratriathlon, shooting, swimming, track and field, and/or wheelchair tennis.  Live near one of the Move United Sanctioned Competitions?  If not competing, why not volunteer?  Enjoy the community and help make the events a success!

Type of Role: Local volunteers for sanctioned competitions can register for a variety of roles, including logistical support, sport specific roles, and general event assistance.
Time Commitment:  Between ½ day and 1 week (depending on interest and role selected within the competition)

The Hartford Competition Series is a sub-set of 5 premiere events within the Move United sanctioned competitions calendar at which Move United has an increased presence and role.  Additional volunteers are needed at these events to assist with specific event production needs.

  • Texas Regional Games: San Antonio, TX (May 2-7)
  • Great Lakes Games: Chicago, IL (May 9-14)
  • Desert Challenge: Phoenix, AZ (May 23-28)
  • UCO Endeavor Games: Edmond, Ok (June 6-11)
  • Nationals: Birmingham, AL (July 6-15)

Type Of Role: A physically demanding role assisting with logistics to include set up and break down of equipment, signage, tents, and other behind the scenes logistical aspects of the event.
Time Commitment:  Between ½ day and 1 week (depending on interest and role selected within the competition)
Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Ability to lift 50 pounds and reach overhead.
What’s Included: Unpaid.  Benefits of community engagement and service along with education around the behind the scenes of event management and logistics.

Become an Official

USAWFL:

The USA Wheelchair Football League is the first of its kind football league for adults with disabilities to reach their highest potential through a competitive, fast-paced, team sport. The USA Wheelchair Football League brings together highly trained coaches with passionate athletes, building skills and inspiring athletes to excel both on and off the field through teamwork, dedication, and resilience.

Since 2020, more than 700 athletes and coaches have participated in USA Wheelchair Football League programs, growing their skills and love for football. Officials are an essential part of the game and preside over the field of plan and ensure our athletes have a fun, safe and fair experience.

Time Commitment: In Person Training May 12 in the Chicago area, plus Online Course (approx.. 5 hours) and commitment to travel to one or more 2023 tournaments between August and October (dates and location at www.usawfl.org) as paid official.

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Experience coaching or officiating football preferred, but not required. Knowledge of football and willingness to become proficient and knowledgeable with the USAWFL rulebook to enforce the rules and field safety in a consistent and unbiased manner.  A commitment to future availability to officiate at 1 or more tournaments per year (as needed/available).  Officials are a paid position within the USAWFL.

What’s Included: A $1,000 travel stipend to attend Spring training camp is provided to those accepted to the program.  Tournament officiating opportunities are paid and travel is covered by local hosts.

 

Para Powerlifting: Move United is seeking Warfighters to be trained as Adapted Powerlifting Technical Officials to expand its pool of qualified volunteers able to officiate at Move United Sanctioned Competitions.

Time Commitment:  One day in person training (approximately 8 hours) followed immediately by 1 day of real life officiating experience at competition. Two to 3 days of travel to in person training/competition.

Training 1: St. Louis, MO May 19-20, 2023

Training 2: Hoover, AL July 8-9, 2023

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Experience or knowledge of powerlifting a plus (but not essential) and willingness to spend time to become proficient and knowledgeable with rules.  A commitment to future availability to officiate at 1 or more competitions per year (as needed/available).

What’s Included: Up to a $1,000 travel stipend plus a $75 reimbursement for Logan University membership fee is provided to those accepted to the program to attend the in-person event. Future opportunities to officiate are a voluntary position.

 

Track and Field: Move United is seeking Warfighters to be trained as USA Track and Field certified officials to expand its pool of qualified volunteers able to officiate at Move United Sanctioned Competitions.

Time Commitment:  In person or online training (approximately 4 hours) with local USATF Association for general USATF officials certification. Training followed by open book exam in order to receive certification. Second training to follow online (approximately 1 hour – self-paced) for para specific officials training. Second training followed by open book exam in order to receive para certification. Attend in person para certification training and/or 1 sanctioned competition, request information from Jessie Cloy at jcloy@moveunitedsport.org.

Training Option 1: Spokane, WA April 30, 2023

Training Option 2: Hoover, AL July 8, 2023

Attend 1 sanctioned competition: 3-5 days taking place between May and July 2023.

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Experience or knowledge of track and field a plus (but not essential) and willingness to spend time to become proficient and knowledgeable with USATF rules.  A commitment to future availability to officiate at 1 or more competitions per year (as needed/available).

What’s Included: Up to a $1,000 travel stipend plus a $55 reimbursement for USATF membership fee is provided to those accepted to the program to attend the in-person event. Future opportunities to officiate are a voluntary position.

Coach

Archery:

Move United is seeking Warfighters to be trained as USA Archery Level 1 instructor to expand its pool of qualified volunteers able to coach archery throughout the country.

Time Commitment:  Two day in person training (approximately 12 hours) plus travel days.

Training 1: Louisville, KY May 14-15, 2023

Training 2: Colorado Springs, CO Fall 2023

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Experience or knowledge of archery a plus (but not essential) and willingness to spend time to become proficient and knowledgeable with rules.  A commitment to future availability to coach athletes.

What’s Included: Up to a $1,000 travel stipend is provided to those accepted to the program to attend the in-person event. Future opportunities to coach are a voluntary position.

 

Track and Field:

Move United is seeking Warfighters to be trained as para track and field coaches to expand its pool of qualified volunteers able to coach track and field throughout the country.

Time Commitment:  Two day in person training (approximately 16 hours) plus travel days.

Training 1: Wimberely, TX February 3-5, 2023

Training 2: Spokane, WA April 29, 2023

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Experience or knowledge of track and field a plus (but not essential) and willingness to spend time to become proficient and knowledgeable with rules.  A commitment to future availability to coach athletes.

What’s Included: Up to a $1,000 travel stipend is provided to those accepted to the program to attend the in-person event. Future opportunities to coach are a voluntary position.

Internships

Paid opportunities for veterans interested in working in adaptive sports.

Below are the links to our Nike/Move United (PAID) Internships for veterans with a physical disability interested in adapted sports. The goal is to create veteran leaders in the adaptive sports realm. The internship provides individuals with specialized skills based on their areas of interest in adaptive sports and connections to our over 200 Member organizations. The internships are $15/hr. If travel is required Per diem ($50) and the organization will pay for travel.

Type Of Role: Training alongside Move United staff to learn about careers in adaptive sports

Time Commitment:  30-40 hrs/week for a 3 month period

Pre-requisites and Qualifications: Listed within each position description below along with application link.  Interviews are conducted.
