In the mid 70’s after completing his college education, Andy Fleming delved right into the disabled sports movement. He served as coordinator of community adaptive recreation programs and director of sports events for disabled athletes for the City of Santa Barbara, California. Andy became the first Executive Director of the National Wheelchair Athletic Association in 1982 and was named to the United States Olympic Committee’s Committe on Sports for the Disabled, where he assisted in developing policies and programs for athletes with disabilities.
Andy served as technical director for the first wheelchair track exhibition events during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. In 1985, he accepted the position of national sports director for the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). Andy was responsible for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games (at the time the largest wheelchair sports event in the country), and all sports and recreational activities for the organization and its thirty-four chapters.
In 1994, Andy assumed the prestigious position of President and CEO of the Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee (APOC) and led the effort to organize the X Paralympic Games. Andy’s expertise in the area of sports management was enhanced by his experience as a nationally recognized Class V wheelchair athlete. Andy Fleming is President of the U.S. Disabled Athletes Fund, a national organization formed by APOC to continue to develop the legacy of the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games.
