About the Equipment Grant

Move United, in partnership with The Hartford, is empowering youth and adults with disabilities to achieve amazing things by making adaptive equipment and sports more accessible. The program goal is to make a significant impact in adaptive sports by empowering 60,000 people, including youth and adults with disabilities, to participate sports and recreation over 10 years.

Having the proper adaptive equipment is a game changer. This grant provides up to $5,000 in adaptive sports equipment to help athletes pursue their goals and reach new heights—on and off the field of play.

Athlete Equipment Grant Details

Athlete Eligibility Requirements

  • Invited to apply by Move United or a Member Organization
  • Demonstrates need and commitment to the sport (recreational or competitive)
  • Registered to attend one of the following and be present for the gifting moment/presentation:
      • Member Organization Activation Event
      • Competition Series Event Gifting Moment (see list of five events below)
      • Ski Spectacular Gifting Moment
      • The Hartford Activation Event
  • Provides equipment specs: sizing, vendor, cost, and estimated turnaround (recommended including a vendor quote)
  • Has not previously received The Hartford Human Achievement Award or Equipment Grant

 

Adaptive Shooting and Biathlon equipment are not covered by this grant.

Grant Criteria

Athletes applying for the Equipment Grant must meet EITHER grant criteria:

Income-Based Grant

  • U.S. legal permanent resident
  • Actively engaged in sports for at least a year
  • Youth must be enrolled in school
  • Youth qualifies for or is receiving assistance from: Medicaid, Unemployment, Social Services Disability Benefits, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Free School Lunch Program, Aid for Dependent Children, Foster Care or other similar state or federal financial assistance program (we do not require verification)
  • Willing to share story with media

 

Emerging Athlete Grant

  • U.S. legal permanent resident
  • Medically classifiable for Paralympic Sport you are applying under (current classification not required)
  • Actively training and competing in the sport you are applying under
  • Youth must be enrolled in school
  • Not on a national team in the sport you are applying under, or receiving funding from your NGB (this award is intended for grassroots athletes who have not yet competed at the elite international level)
  • Willing to share story with media

Review, Selection, and Notification Process

  • Athlete applications will be accepted on a rolling basis; deadlines are provided in email invitation to apply
  • Move United will work with the Member Organization, Competition Series Event, Ski Spectacular, or The Hartford to confirm event registration/attendance and order the equipment for the selected athlete(s)
  • Athlete(s) selected for the Equipment Grant will be surprised at the event and will not be notified in advance

The Hartford Competition Series Events

Athletes competing at one of The Hartford Competition Series Events are welcome to apply for the Athlete Equipment Grant, but must be registered to compete and planning to attend the gifting moment at the event. Applications will be accepted through the deadlines listed below. The locations, times, and additional details for each gifting moment can be found in the event schedule for individual Competition Series event. Please check the website/schedule for the most up to date information.
