"After losing all hope of recovering from my injury, I found a new path forward. Sport gave me the strength to rebuild my life and discover what's possible." - U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman Max Rohn
Rohn served as an active duty Navy corpsman with Police Transition Team 6 D, stationed out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and attached to 2nd MHG. While deployed to Al-Anbar province, Iraq, his vehicle was struck by an RKG-3 attack on May 2, 2009, in Al-Fallujah. He sustained injuries to both legs, his right forearm, and a traumatic brain injury.
Rohn was transported to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he underwent extensive treatment over two and a half years. Despite ten surgeries and numerous procedures to save his right leg, complications from his injuries ultimately led to a below-knee amputation on August 15, 2011. He continued his recovery at the Military Advanced Training Center as an outpatient until his medical retirement from the U.S. Navy on March 28, 2013.
Through adaptive sports, Rohn discovered new ways to challenge himself and reconnect with his strength. As a Move United Warfighter Ambassador, he continues to push boundaries and motivate others in the veteran community to explore the transformative power of adaptive recreation.
Most recently, Rohn took home silver in discus at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, throwing a season-best 50.92 meters and representing the highest level of international competition.
