My injury occurred when I was an active duty Navy corpsman with Police Transition Team 6 D. We were station out of Camp Lejeune NC, attached to 2nd MHG. We deployed to Al-Anbar province Iraq in January of 2009. I was in an RKG-3 Attack while riding in my HUMVEE on May 02, 2009 in Al-Fullujah Iraq. I suffered injuries to my right forearm, right leg, left leg, and loss of consciousness due to a traumatic brain injury. I was then transported to Walter Reed Military Medical Center (WRMMC) to undergo 10 surgeries to try and save my right leg. After the 10th surgery, my right leg suffered a staph infection because of a medical clamp being from a previous surgery. The Doctor that was responsible for leaving the plastic surgery vascular clamp is Dr. Okura (plastic surgery). The plastic surgery vascular clamp had grown encapsulated within my leg because of heterotopic ossification. After several rounds of antibiotics, we then went back to surgery with Doctor Howard (plastic surgery) to remove the hardware left in my leg. The doctor had to chip the clamp from the newly developed bone in my leg causing damage to the bone, tissue, and the nerves in my right lower leg. Due to the loss of function, pain, and swelling from the surgery, I became incapacitated and lost all hope of recovering from my injury. I tried many different treatments for the next 18 months to save my right leg. The procedures had no effect on my status and I began looking at other options. The result of my limb salvage for 2 and a half years, was amputating my right leg below the knee on 08/15/2011. I was in the hospital for 5 weeks after the surgery. I continued my recovery at the Military Advanced Training Center (MATC) in Walter Reed Military Medical Center (WRMMC) as an outpatient until my medical retirement from the US Navy on 03/28/2013.
