Mary Riddell and Geoff Krill Inducted into U.S. Disabled Snow Sports Hall of Fame

Mary Riddell and Geoff Krill are the newest members of the U.S. Disabled Snow Sports Hall of Fame, which is coordinated by Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA). The two individuals were inducted at the 30th annual The Hartford Ski Spectacular, one of the nation’s largest winter sports festivals for individuals with physical disabilities that took place in Breckenridge, Colorado.

The U.S. Disabled Snow Sports Hall of Fame Award recognizes outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to adaptive snow sports (alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic and biathlon) in two categories: Recreational / Development and Competition. The hall was created to honor individuals who have had an influential role in the field of disability sports as well as athletes who have excelled in adaptive sports.

The award in the Competition category recognizes an individual (participant or coach), who has been active in international competition. Race results, team participation, innovative coaching techniques, and event promotions are considered for this category. Competitive racers and coaches must be retired from active racing or coaching for a minimum of three years prior to nomination.

Mary Riddell, from Dolores, Colorado, is the 2017 honoree in the Competition category. Riddell began skiing at the age of three at Durango/Purgatory Adaptive Sports.  She qualified for the US Adaptive Ski Team when she was 14 years old and for the next nine years she was a dominate figure in national and international competition.

Riddell won six Paralympic medals including two Gold. She also won six World Championship medals, two of them Gold. In addition, she won three World Cup Overall Globes, 11 individual event World Cup Globes, and multiple National titles. During the 2000/2001 season, Riddell was on the podium at every World Cup race, which she considers her most successful accomplishment.

The award in the Recreational / Development category recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field, including innovative techniques, specialized equipment, program development, education or public relations.

Geoff Krill, from North Woodstock, New Hampshire, was selected as the 2017 honoree in the Recreation/Development category. When Krill was younger, he believed he would work in the hotel restaurant industry. However, a snowmobile accident in 1995 led him in a different direction, one which has gifted him innumerable life experiences with travel to amazing places and interactions with incredible people. Today, he is the Executive Director and Chief Motivational Officer of Eastern Adaptive Sports (EAS) and a third term member of the PSIA/AASI National Team.  He continues to serve on the steering committee of the Adaptive Board of Examiners for PSIA-Eastern.

When Krill isn’t organizing summer sporting activities on Little Squam Lake for EAS, he is the Training Director for Loon Mountain’s Snowsports School. Over the last four years, Krill has also helped to grow and facilitate the Spaulding Adaptive Ski Club.  In his spare time, Krill speaks with students of all ages about overcoming challenges and meeting adversity with problem solving.  Krill credits sports with the path he took for education as helping to meet each goal he sets for himself.
