Julius Duval is one of those unforgettable characters you remember forever. As an I-B athlete, he dominated the track & field events in regional, national, and international competition. Julius was a cagey competitor who used both talent and psychology against his most formidable opponents.
From the time he burst on the scene in 1968 until he retired from competition in the 1980s, Julius placed first in slalom, the 40-meter dash (the only track event open to athletes with quadriplegia), shot put, discus, javelin, club throw, and pentathlon. He was a superb athlete who was as gracious in defeat (which was rare) as he was in victory. He held numerous track & field records through the years.
Julius was never reluctant to speak out on his own behalf or on behalf of others less successful. He was highly respected among his peers. Julius enjoyed competing as much as he enjoyed life itself. He was one of the most talented and popular athletes on the wheelchair sports scene.
