Maureen Freda was a visionary leader and advocate whose work laid the foundation for the growth and long-term success of youth adaptive sports in America. As the first Chairperson of the Wheelchair Sports USA Junior Committee, Maureen built the structure that would shape generations of young athletes and coaches to come.

Under her leadership, the Junior Division was transformed from concept to reality. Through her direction and dedication, she achieved several key milestones that established the groundwork for national youth competition, including:

Creation of the first Junior Division brochure to promote participation and awareness

Development of the first qualifying standards for junior athletes

Organization of the first national competition for junior athletes

Formation of a committed working committee to carry forward the goals of the Junior Division

Thanks to Maureen’s vision and leadership, the Wheelchair Sports USA Junior Program continues to thrive, serving as a living legacy of her pioneering work and devotion to youth in adaptive sports.

Maureen’s service extended well beyond her role with the Junior Committee. She was an active and respected member of the Wheelchair Sports USA Board of Directors, serving as Secretary from 1990 to 1994 and Treasurer from 1983 to 1994. She also chaired the Credential Committee, organized Regional Appalachian Games, and served as an official in weightlifting and field events — a testament to her versatility and commitment across all facets of adaptive sport.

In addition, Maureen contributed on a national scale as Chairperson of the Youth Committee for the U.S. Organization of Disability Associations, further advancing opportunities for young people with disabilities to engage in sport and recreation.

Through her leadership, vision, and tireless service, Maureen Freda helped build the framework that made junior adaptive sports a national success. Her legacy lives on in the continued growth of youth programs, the countless athletes she empowered, and the thriving spirit of inclusion she helped create.
