Sharon Myers

Competition | 1988

Sharon Myers started her wheelchair sports career in 1968 as Sharon Moore. She met a national champion weightlifter named Billy Myers, they married, and both continued to excel in sports. Sharon was one of the few women athletes who not only competed in multiple events but consistently won gold, silver or bronze medals in national and international competition. She was Captain of the U.S. Women’s Basketball Teams in 1968 through 1970, for the 1972 U.S. Paralympic Women’s Team and the Women’s Swim Team.

Sharon competed in four Paralympic competitions (1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980) and four Pan American Games (1969, 1971, 1973 and 1978). She also competed in international competition during those years at Stoke Mandeville in England and in other European invitational meets. Sharon’s accomplishments were impressive as she set national records in the 100 meter dash; the 200 and 400 meter runs; and the shot put, javelin and discus. She held swimming national records in the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle, and won gold medals in archery, slalom and table tennis.

Sharon’s Pan American records were just as impressive with records in the 60 meter dash; plus the freestyle and backstroke in swimming; and the discus and javelin in field events. In Paralympic competition, she was a member of the record setting 4 x 25 meter relay swim team.

Sharon continued her globetrotting ways as a developer of accessible destinations and vacations for a travel agency.
