Ted McLean

Ted had a reputation as a loyal and dedicated worker—the kind who was instrumental in making organizations successful without worrying about who got the credit.

Ted officiated in the first National Wheelchair Games (NWG) at Bulova Park, and for over 15 years he served as the Games Director of the NWG in New York. He performed the same role when the Games were staged at the University of Illinois in 1975 and 1980. Ted also directed sanctioned regional meets in Pennsylvania.

He was one of the first officials to promote the idea of an event to demonstrate an athlete’s skills and agility, and he was instrumental in the development of the slalom event. He was also one of the premier National Wheelchair Basketball officials in the country. Ted was selected as Head Official for numerous Final Four Championships and was involved in writing officiating rules and developing officials’ competency exams.

When the National Wheelchair Athletic Committee was formed in 1956, Ted served as the Secretary and was involved in writing the rules that governed various sports. Ted McLean was one of the most respected and popular officials—regardless of whether he was on the field, on the track, or on the court.
