Golfer hitting the ball

William Mathis

William Mathis lives in Colorado Springs, CO where he enjoys outdoor activities with his wife, Mallory, and his children Allen (13) and Sora (10). He is a US Army Veteran who served one tour in Iraq and eight tours at the National Training Center. During his time on active duty with the army, he served in several fields of service - over 100 fueling/refueling operations, troop transport and over 150 re-arming missions as well as providing briefings for ongoing missions regarding Military Intelligence.

Shortly after returning to the U.S., he started noticing that his vision was fading due to his time in combat theater, exposure to unknown elements and open-angle glaucoma.
After a few years of restricted life without vision, he attended the Colorado Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and the team there told him about Leader Dog. He traveled to Leader Dog for an advanced O &M session and later returned to Leader Dog to receive his Leader Dog “Rio”. After getting some much needed training, he began learning what sports and activities he could do without sight. He tried goal ball, golfing, cycling, rock climbing, archery, weight lifting, and bowling but excels in golfing, cycling, snowboarding, and bowling.
