Competition Environment – Weather
Alabama weather changes rapidly. Be sure to check the weather daily, and bring a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, bug spray, and shade tents and umbrellas as needed.
Heat-related illnesses are one of the greatest risks for athletes competing outdoors. It is advised to begin hydrating a couple of days ahead of your arrival at Nationals and continue to hydrate well throughout the week. Cooling towels will be provided by Move United and ample water and ice will be available at all sport venues.
Weather announcements will be communicated through the Nationals App. If severe weather happens during a competition, an announcement will be made via the Nationals App as well as over the PA system, where applicable, and the emergency plan will be followed.
The most common weather threat in Alabama is lightning. An event delay will be implemented if lightning strikes within 15 miles during an outdoor event. Participants will be notified through the Nationals App noted above. In the event of a lightning delay, attendees shall take shelter inside fully enclosed, grounded vehicles. An announcement will be made when the all-clear after a minimum of 30 minutes have elapsed since a detected lightning strike within a 10-mile radius of the venue.
