30 players from 12 states as far away as Hawaii, North Carolina, Oregon, and Alabama, along with twelve Arizonans will compete in Coed A, B, C, and 18 Under Singles & Doubles events. Gender-neutral divisions have replaced former men’s and women’s divisions in wheelchair tennis since 2021. David Lewis of Indiana is the number one seed in the Coed A singles and is ranked 7th in USTA National standings. Several Tucson players from Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports wheelchair tennis including Steve O’Brien, A division, and Vincent Wilson, 18 under, will compete. Tournament Co-Directors Jason Keatseagnsilp and Mia Hansen are pleased with the turnout. “We are excited to bring so many wheelchair tennis players to Tucson. This will be a great weekend of competition and camaraderie,” said Keatseangsilp, an internationally ranked Team USA member who heads the SAAS tennis committee. “Players look forward to seeing each other since the pandemic canceled many events in 2021. Ours is the first of several USTA wheelchair tennis tournaments this spring,” said Hansen, the Executive Director of SAAS.

Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports provided scholarships to support seven players in the 18 Under division including Zane Goodwin, the number 1 seed from Alabama, and newcomer Eric Court from Hawaii. The Arizona Open is the first USTA Junior Wheelchair Tennis Tournament Series event of 2022. SAAS received a USTA Wheelchair Tennis Grassroots grant to support the growth of wheelchair tennis, especially at the junior level. Additional support comes from Citi, University of Arizona Adaptive Athletics, Jim Click Automotive, MoveUnited, and Raising Cane’s.
