Title of Position: Intern – Summer Program

Location: Based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado

About STARS: Our mission is to empower and enrich people’s lives through adaptive recreational activities. STARS (Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports) was founded in 2006 and became a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization in 2007, to provide sports programming and training to individuals with disabilities. We strive to increase our participants’ independence while focusing on their abilities rather than disabilities. STARS accepts Participants as young as the age of 5 and older, with any disability. We focus on a safe, fun learning environment where they can achieve their goals!

 

STARS Internship Summary: Our program is goal-oriented and fosters a learning environment with an emphasis in career exploration and development. Summer internships typically run from Mid-May through mid-August. The commitment is based on 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship with work days to include nights, weekends and holidays. Weeks may be as little as 30 hours and as long as 60 hours, based on programming needs. Interns are expected to complete a full season depending on programming needs and intern request. STARS recognizes student schedules may vary and the start / end dates may alter. STARS offers internships to students in a vast array of degrees, but we commonly host students studying: Outdoor Education, Recreation, Health & Exercise Sciences, Sport Management, Community-based Therapeutic Recreation, Nonprofit Management, Program Administration & Management, Psychology, Sociology and Physical Education, Kinesiology, Tourism, and other related fields. STARS offers internship opportunities in both the winter and summer seasons.

 

Position Description: Summer interns are expected to work in multiple areas of the organization throughout their internship to develop a well-rounded experience. Areas of the STARS organization include the administrative office; program desk; staff & volunteer trainings; observe & teach private & group lessons, camps, locals programs, race training; special events and fundraisers.

 

Duties:

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate participants and activities for a wide range of abilities and backgrounds

• Attend Intern training including sports specific, disability specific, and programmatic specific training

• Plan, assist, oversee and chaperone group and community programming

• Assist with STARS special events, camps, and fundraising efforts

• Maintain and gain technical experience with different adaptive equipment

• Complete an Intern Special Project (as outlined by your intern program)

• Assist with administrative duties and program office duties

• Prepare for field days, including loading and unloading trailers/vehicles, cleaning equipment, etc.

• Preparing food for events and outings

• Document Participants’ progress and maintain accurate records

• Complete a formal review with Intern Coordinator prior to completing the internship

• Other duties as assigned

 

Education and Experience Required:

• College degree (or progressing toward it) in relevant fields of study

• Experience teaching a subject or activity

• Ability to follow directions and work independently

• Be available at least May 15th through August 9th, additional days/weeks available to fulfill STARS needs and internship requirements

• Agree to STARS intern housing rental terms (If housing is needed)

• Experience working/volunteering with individuals with special needs (Preferred)

• Knowledge of disabilities (Preferred)

• Current CPR/First Aid certification (Preferred).

• Mechanically Inclined (Preferred)

 

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to spend time outdoors in hot/ extreme weather conditions, have the physical strength to participate in daily activities, and energetically participate in activities all day long

• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. with assistance

• Must have dexterity to operate a computer daily

• Must have auditory and visual acuity to operate computers and other electronic devices

• Must have auditory and visual acuity to interact with guests and participants on a daily basis

• Must be able to successfully manage multiple, high-priority tasks in a fast-paced environment

 

Background Screen: To protect our participants and our program, all interns must successfully pass a background check prior to hiring.
