The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD) seeks an Adaptive & Inclusion Specialist to plan, organize and coordinate the district’s adaptive recreation programs for people experiencing disabilities. This position provides inclusion support for people of all abilities to recreate in district programs and facilities. The specialist also coordinates with a variety of staff from different backgrounds located at recreation, nature and aquatic facilities throughout the district to implement all-inclusive programs and services.

 

The Adaptive & Inclusion Specialist joins a team within the sports and inclusion division and supervises a team of part-time inclusion aides, camp staff, program staff and volunteers.
The Adaptive & Inclusion Specialist gets to work with exciting programs including Camp Rivendale, Community Partners, therapeutic recreation classes for youth and adults, adaptive Rec Mobile programs and an all abilities Triathlon.

 

The ideal candidate has experience providing and prioritizing services to seniors, adults and youth at multiple sites on a daily basis, experience creating inclusion plans, and experience working with external stakeholders. The ideal candidate is also highly skilled at addressing conflicts that may arise and communicating professionally in both verbal and written form with people of varying backgrounds and perspectives. A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) license is required for the position or the ability to obtain one within twelve months of hire.

 

The schedule for this position is based on the needs of the programs. This position is primarily Monday-Friday with weekends as needed. A daily schedule is usually 9am-6pm with flexibility to work earlier or later as needed.

Essential Job Functions

Components of the job include (but are not limited to):

  • Plan, coordinate, implement and oversee a centralized adaptive recreation and inclusion program for the district.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness in meeting established objectives.
  • Develop and present to staff a training curriculum related to inclusion and serving people with disabilities.
  • Develops and implements adaptive and inclusion programs to meet the needs of patrons with developmental, learning, or physical disabilities or mental illness.
  • Develops districtwide inclusion plans.
  • Provides technical and functional direction to assigned staff; gives work assignments; reviews and controls quality of work; participates in performing the more complex programming duties.
  • Understand and apply adaptive resources for individuals with developmental, mental, and/or physical disabilities or mental illness.

Education and Experience

Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would likely provide the applicant with the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

A bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent work-life experience, and three (3) years increasingly responsible experience working with individuals with disabilities within a specialized recreation and/or community inclusion program setting, including one (1) year experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.

 

Possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
Possession of a valid First Aid and CPR certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire, valid CTRS certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
