Kent was one of thousands of Vietnam vets who returned from war with permanent physical injuries. He commenced his wheelchair sports career in 1977 in swimming, table tennis and wheelchair basketball while attending Syracuse University, where he received a BA in psychology. He also competed in track & field but swimming was the sport where his talents shone brightest. Kent competed in every National Wheelchair Games from 1978 in Fisherville, Virginia to 1989 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, garnering at least one gold medal in every competition. He also was a member of Team USA that competed in numerous international competitions.
Kent was a member of the USA contingent at the Pan American Wheelchair Games in 1982 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. He attended the 1984 World Games at Stoke Mandeville in England. Kent was on the teams that competed in 1986 that competed at the Pan American Wheelchair Games in Puerto Rico; the World Games at Stoke Mandeville; and the International Games for the Disabled in Gotenborg, Sweden. In 1987 he competed at the International Games for the Disabled in Paris, France and the International Wheelchair Swim Competition in Santa Clara, CA. Kent wrapped up his international competition as a member of Team USA at the 1988 Paralympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.
Kent’s involvement did not end on the pool deck. He served on many local boards in upstate New York, including serving for many years on the United Spinal Association Board. He was a founding member of the Syracuse Flyers Wheelchair Basketball Team. In 1983, Kent was a founding member of the National Wheelchair Athletic Association Swim Committee and served as the Vice-Chair of the committee for years.
