2023 Move United Education Conference 

 

Move United is seeking athletes, sport providers and sport professionals to develop and deliver curriculum at the Move United Education Conference.

The Move United Education Conference invites sport professionals, sport providers and athletes to come together for informative education & awareness sessions and hands-on skills-based learning workshops. The 2023 Move United Education Conference provides the tools, training, and conversations to make disability inclusion in sport a reality. This conference will incite action and challenge attendees to make an impact around inclusion, access & belonging.

Join your fellow professionals and emerging leaders in the in the sport and recreation industry who are currently creating or are looking to create opportunities for athletes with disabilities. Historically, attendees have represented a variety of affiliations including Move United member organizations, general sport organizations, city parks & recreation departments, universities, schools, VA hospital staff, general hospital therapists, disability resource groups, and more.

This year’s theme, “Disability Inclusion in Sport: Transforming Intent to Action” invites sport providers, sport professionals, and athletes to come together over a mutual interest in elevating sport opportunities for athletes with disabilities. Discussion will center around affecting measurable change and creating longstanding impact in adaptive sports.

 

Please complete the Presenter Call for Proposals after reading the descriptions below:

  • Pre-Conference Workshop (half day to multi-day, prior to conference opening)
    • Examples: 3-day adaptive kayaking skills workshop, 2-day adaptive climbing instructor training, 2-day risk management training, 2-day anti-bias training
  • Conference Session/Workshop (60 or 90 minutes, during the main conference May 16-17)
  • 30-minute Talk (i.e. TED talk format, during the main conference May 16 or 17) aligning with one of the session tracks listed below.
  • Poster (displayed May 16-17) Please complete the Presenter Call for Proposals after reading the descriptions below:
    • 36″x48″ poster display of current research relating to the conference narrative
    • The purpose of the poster session is to provide opportunities for conversations, shared ideas, and networking between authors/presenters and attendees.
    • Results do not need to be completed yet for submission to be eligible
    • Not all authors need be present for the in-person poster session

Please note the poster session application will remain open until February 24th, 2023.

 

Session proposals must align with one of the following tracks:

    • Equity in Sport – This track will focus on leveling the playing field in and around sport.
      • Example Topics:
        • Deconstructing gender bias & gender norms
        • Improving access to elite sport pipeline
        • Equity & inclusion in schools – bridging the gap
        • Disability community language – keeping staff & volunteers up to date
        • Ensuring employees have equitable access to work place benefits
        • Land-use acknowledgements – how/what/why in adaptive sports
    • Program Development & Management – This track will focus on addressing emerging challenges& best practices around developing, facilitating,  and maintaining programs.
      • Example Topics:
        • Building inclusive culture amongst volunteers
        • Fostering a growth mindset in your organization
        • Fundraising & social media accessibility – Actionable steps
        • Measuring impact/success
        • Engaging with local schools
        • Venues – universal design – simple modifications
        • Leveraging ADA policy in your sport space to increase accessibility
    • Emerging Technologies – This track will focus on the latest innovations in adaptive sport equipment.
      • Example Topics:
        • Trail access – evolving equipment – how to access
        • 8-Pack chair lifts – challenges & success in adaptive sports – working w/resorts
        • Technology to streamline administrative tasks – how to fund
        • Sport orthotics & prosthetics
  • Please note that examples listed are simply to provide ideas as to which topics may fall within each track.
  • Within each track, various session will be offered to accommodate different audiences (i.e. general sport provider new to working with individuals with disabilities, inclusive sport provider, adaptive sport provider)
  • Sessions with an understood priority to integrate DEI lens will be prioritized.
  • Proposals will be reviewed with the following taken into consideration: relevance to conference theme & tracks, feedback from past conferences about areas of need, diversity of presenter experiences and background as well as diversity of session topic, qualifications of presenter, clarity of session purpose, quality of proposal, and other considerations.
  • Presenters will receive complimentary registration to the 2023 Move United Education Conference.

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE SESSIONS?

Conference sessions should strive to:

  • Engage the audience with interactive presentation
  • Appeal to different learning styles
  • Highlight innovative, groundbreaking developments
  • Promote evidenced-based practices
  • Incorporate anecdotes to reference actual experiences in the field
  • Collaborate with co-presenter(s) where it would be beneficial to add value to the session
  • Include an experiential component if appropriate
  • Provide attendees with key takeaways

HOW WILL MOVE UNITED BE SELECTING PRESENTERS?

Move United Education Conference Committee will evaluate the submissions and select top presenters for further review, considering the following:
1. Presenter has connection to the mission and core values of Move United.
2. Reputation and experience of the presenter.
3. Diversity of background and experiences.
4. Quality of performance and services as a sport provider, public speaker, and/or educator.
5. Capability of the presenter to perform the services within the specified time constraints.
6. Expertise is suitable to address the session/workshop topic.

This annual gala has raised funds to support 16,000 wounded warfighters and family members who have participated in more than 70 adaptive sports across the U.S.A. More than 50 wounded warfighters and family members will participate in our gala this year, including sharing their stories on stage. This is a gala like no other - Please join us and honor our wounded warfighters!
